Our story

A craft of the Wounaan people

In the rainforest of Colombia's Pacific coast, the Wounaan people have coiled palm fibre into baskets for generations. Chocó Coil brings these baskets straight from the weavers — each one built up coil by coil, using the natural colour of the fibre and a little dyed detail. It is a slow, precise craft that takes days of patient handwork, and the pattern of every basket is the maker's own. We work with the weavers directly and pay fairly, so the craft continues and the baskets are made the right way.

How it's made

The baskets are coiled from palm fibre, wrapped around a core and stitched into place coil by coil. Natural fibre provides the base colour, with dyed fibre added for patterns. Each basket is built entirely by hand over days of work.

How to use it

Use them as a decorative basket on a shelf, a table or a wall, or for holding small items. Keep them dry and dust them gently; the coiled fibre is durable and holds its shape well.
